Welcome to the OpenChoice Project's Web site.

OpenChoice is a research project being conducted by a team of researchers at the School of Information at the University of Texas at Austin. OpenChoice is an open source, community-managed filter for the Internet. It is being created to provide an additional alternative to commercial filters so that libraries can both receive federal money and collaboratively manage the content of their filter's blacklist. The mission of the OpenChoice Project is to help librarians be actively involved in ensuring that their patrons can access as much beneficial information as possible. The two high-level goals of the OpenChoice project are to develop an open source Internet content filter for libraries and to develop software that allows the community of practicing librarians to contribute to the development of the filter.
